JJ Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek was a massive hit and, much like 1982′s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, it re-invigorated the franchise, earning praise from both audiences and critics. So, naturally, a sequel is in the works! Possibly two of them, according to screenwriter Robert Orci:
Nothing was decided [at the last meeting]. It was really about, hmmm. You know what, I’ll give you a tidbit. [They said to us] ‘We thought maybe you could do that as like 2 and 3.’
While I suspect a third film is merely a consideration at this point, it would not surprise me to see the series end as a trilogy. It’s almost common practice that once your film reaches blockbuster status, you immediately start talking about upgrading the series into a trilogy. Personally, I rather them make one sequel at a time than shoot two films back to back, potentially degrading the quality of both films. On the other hand, it did work for Back to the Future! Maybe it could work again?
