Spielberg to Produce Matt Helm, Not Direct?

Has the “Bearded One” decided not to take the Helm?

StevenSpielberg1-300Word has been spreading all throughout the internet. “Steven Spielberg is wanting to direct the big screen adaption of Donald Hamilton’s spy book series, Matt Helm!” As far as movie news goes, it was perhaps Wednesday’s biggest scoop of the day, having been published on every movie related website from Ain’t It Cool News to The Hollywood Reporter. Who can blame them?  It’s always big news when Spielberg takes on another project!

Sadly, it looks like the celebration might have been a bit premature. Spielberg will only be producing Matt Helm, according to Variety’s Michael Flemming:

The drama played out more quickly than I expected. Spielberg has decided not to direct “Matt Helm,” but will instead steer it as a producer. Paramount will go out to other directors. Spielberg is expected to finalize his choice shortly, and the film he chooses will have DreamWorks/Reliance aboard as co-financier and Disney as co-distributor.

So with Matt Helm possibly out of the picture, what will be Spielberg’s next project? Will he finally spearhead Intersteller or Lincoln into production? Or will he surprise us with another project? Other than his duties on Tin Tin, I wouldn’t be surprised if he just sat in the producer’s chair until 2011.
