Zombieland
« on: October 14, 2009, 04:43:01 AM »
zombieland-harrelsonIt's hard to take the undead seriously. They are often characterized as slow, brainless drones who manage to sneak up on people and render the world a barren wasteland. Therefore, the only good zombie films of recent years have been, for the most part, comedies. Zombieland follows the tradition of Shaun of the Dead by providing a fun, tongue in cheek, carnival-like experience.

Jesse Eisenberg's Columbus is one of the few survivors running around in a post-apocalyptic universe and is quite the unlikely suspect. He's a non-athletic, loner college student who has managed to survive by following a strict, self-established set of rules that include keeping up with cardio and being weary of public bathroom stalls. He is joined by the psychotic Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) who approaches zombie killing like a senior hazing a freshmen and is in search of his most valued treasure, the last Twinkie! Down the road, they meet Wichita (Superbad's Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Little Miss Sunshine's Abigal Breslin), a pair of sisters with trust issues.

Despite the title, the zombies aren't actually the stars of the film. The characters played fruitfully by Harrelson, Eisenberg, Stone, and Breslin exorcise near perfect comedic timing, delivering one funny line after another. Of course, a good deal of that credit also goes to the witty screenplay that pays both pays homage and pokes fun at the classics (a couple of which might surprise you!).

Perhaps the highlight of the film was a surprising cameo, whose final moments had me in stitches! I was seriously still laughing from it 20 minutes later. Unlike many others out there, I am not going to spoil who it is. Sure, most of you probably already know by now and those of you who do not could just look it up on IMDB if you wish. Personally, if you don't know, keep it that way! The moment works so much better if you keep the identity of "The King" a surprise.

If it's good Halloween fun you are looking for, Zombieland most certainly delivers! It almost makes a zombie apocalypse look fun, you know, if weren't for all the death and mutilation happening in the background!

When the trailers originally came out for this, I have to admit I wasn't that impressed. I'd grown tired of all these zombie movies that have been flooding the screens lately and even worse yet, the director mentioned that part of his inspiration was "Shaun Of The Dead" (A film which I wasn't a big fan of), so that drew me even further away from it.

After the first week at the box office, I was hearing so many people saying good things about it, that I decided to give in and check it out, I'm so glad I did, what a fun movie. When I returned home I was telling another friend about it and he had the same reservations that I did about the burnt out zombie films of late and said he had no interest in seeing it. Yesterday he called me to tell me he went to see it (reluctantly) with his girlfriend and loved it.

On a side note, am I the only one that thought it was funny that Jesse Eisenberg just starred in "Adventureland" which is set in an amusement park and now "Zombieland" which also does the same?  :P
Amity Island had everything. Clear skies. Gentle surf. Warm water. People flocked there every summer. It was the perfect feeding ground.

I am still debating whether or not to see this film. I have never seen a zombie movie before and from the trailers it looks as if I'd hate it. BUT it's been getting so many good reviews, so it makes me wonder if it's one of those movies that might turn out to be something I'd like.

The only zombie films you should waste your time with are:

Dawn of the Dead (the original)
28 Days Later
Shaun of the Dead
Zombieland

Notice how two of those are comedies  ;)

Maybe the other living dead films like Night, Day, and Land. I've gotten burned out on Night personally and had no interest in seeing Diary of the Dead.

Some people like Night of the Creeps. I personally have not seen it yet, but La La Land is about ready to release it's score in a couple of weeks for those who have seen it and liked it.

Dawn of the Dead (the original)

I actually quite enjoy the remake myself, I thought Snyder did a very good job of putting a transfering the story to a contemporary setting.

It's a decent remake but there are some things that bother me about it. I'm not a big fan of the bleached style of colors used in the film and the strange usage of the Richard Cheese version of Disturbed's Down With the Sickness takes me out of the film. I also think more could have been done with Matt Frewer's character.

I did find it entertaining though.

Oh, and I forget to mention the Evil Dead films, which make up for some good cheeseball horror-comedy fun!
