Kamar vinyl E.T. dolls
« on: January 10, 2010, 06:34:52 AM »
I'm mad on Kamar vinyl E.T. dolls.
They each have their own little character. I will post a picture of my entire family of them soon.
Does anyone else share my like for these little creatures?
I would like people to post their pictures of these cute E.T.'s if you have any.

I have several of these dolls. Unfortunately, the vinyl surfaces are all decaying!  :tickedoff:
I even have a few rare ones with extra long arms and legs (not sure why) but they are also peeling. I wish there was some way of restoring them.
If anyone knows how to restore them, please let me know! Thanks. I'll try to post some pics so you can see what I am talking about.

This is so sad. It's almost too hard to look at. There must be somebody that can help.  :-\

I wonder why they are falling apart like that. Might be the type of material used. I have never seen this before.

One thing I can think of is maybe it's the type of vinyl used. We used to have this plastic cart as kids, and about 5 years ago we discovered it in pieces when we cleaned out the attic. The cart was about 20 years old at the time. We were surprised that it was all in pieces. However we have other plastic items from the 80s such as toys and they haven't decayed like that at all...so it must be the type of plastic used.

Yah, I guess it must be the type of vinyl they used. It is very soft and pliable. Looked very much like fine leather. But now it peels and smudges when touched. It's almost like touching semi-dry paint. I looked on the web and apparently this is a common problem with just about everyones (vinyl coated) E.T. Doll made by Kamar.
I am half tempted to just completely peel one and strip it down. Maybe then I can spray some latex or dip it in some sort of rubber coating? It just bugs the $%! out of me, because these are my most favorite of all my E.T. plush.   :(

Yeah, I was looking online to see if it was something just with your dolls, but apparently it's a common problem with this particular doll made by Kamar. I think it's really too bad that this happens. I wouldn't strip the doll down because that actually hurts its original condition even more, and by trying to fix it yourself I heard is one of the worst things you can do to a collectible...I heard it's best to have a professional do it. I know it costs a little bit of money but it's well worth it and the result is something you'll be much more pleased with.

I would love to have someone professionally fix them, if I could only find somebody knows how. Anyway, I have like 5 or 6 of the vinyl E.T.s so, trying to do one myself couldn't hurt. I'll have to look into it a bit more first.
If anyone knows someone that has fixed these, let me know!
Thanks.
