Is Gremlins 3 On the Way?
« on: January 25, 2010, 11:56:49 AM »
Take this with a grain of salt, but MarketSaw 3D is reporting that another Gremlins film is not only headed our way, but it will be in 3D as well.
Again I have very good information from a top source that tells me another GREMLINS movie is coming to the silver screens and it will be in stereoscopic 3D! It is in the early stages with still lots of hurdles to pass, but it is being developed. This is not a 3D conversion of the original to be clear.

The article is very brief and it's a big unclear on whether or not this will be a sequel or a remake. You should also remember that this is the same blog that is reporting the "Ghostbusters 3 in 3D" rumor, which hasn't been confirmed yet either.

Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with a third Gremlins film, as long as they can find a way to combine the dark nature of the first film with the zany comedy of its sequel. With today's effects technology, there is potential for some great Gremlins-related fun and anyone who has seen the infamous BT commercial knows that they can successfully integrate the puppets with their CGI counterparts. On the other hand, anyone who has listened to the commentaries on the special edition DVDs will know just how much of a pain it was to shoot with the puppets, especially Gizmo! I can easily see why they might option to not use the puppets as much, if at all.

With hollywood going reboot and remake crazy lately, it won't be surprising if that's what happens here.  I don't think people would want to see an aging Zac Galligan and Phoebe Cates.

Don't underestimate the power of Phoebe Cates.   :)

Judging from the vibe I got from the commentary, if she were to join back up, Galligan would be back in a heart beat  ;D

If one of these was to be made, it would still star Zach Galligan. But it would go STRAIGHT to DVD. Joe Dante would get a credit as an "executive producer" (only cause he answers a phone) and it would be shoddy, full of laughable CGI and a totally LAME story.

If you've got £10... and "Inception" is sold out... maybe you can tolerate... "THE A-TEAM" !!!

You really think so? I think Gremlins is a bit more loved than to go straight to DVD. That's like if they made Jurassic Park 4 straight to DVD. I know the expectations for a good Gremlins 3 wouldn't be very high, but I don't think they'd put it straight to DVD, but that's my opinion obviously.

As much as I'd love to see a new 'Gremlins' film being made, I don't really know how it should be done. Should it be like the original? You know, a dark fairy tale. Or should it be more like a screwball comedy like the sequel. I love both films a lot and it's predictable that a studio might want to go for a darker take on the concept. However as unlikely as it is I'd really like to see Joe Dante return to this. I can see him bringing this film to a succesful end. Perhaps when 'The Hole' is finally released the studio might see Dante's has experience with 3-D, it might persuade them to at least consider him. Would Dante be into it? I don't know, probably not but you never can tell. There just might be a Gremlin in his head.

I doubt it would be straight to DVD movie.  It just wouldn't make any business sense to do that in my opinion for a franchise that hasn't had a sequel in 20 years.  The studio obviously recognizes the potential of what can be done with Gremlins with today's technology.

The only way I see it working is if it was reboot/sequel hybrid where Galligan and Cates are in the movie but maybe not the main characters.  I think the movie would work best if the heroes were teenagers or in that age bracket.  It would be nice to get Dante back but I don't think he has the desire to revisit Kingston Falls again.  It would have to be a director who can combine dark humor with suspense.  Off the top of my head:

Tim Burton (fat chance but it would be cool)
Barry Sonnefield
Brad Siberling
Chris Columbus (He wrote original and knows the critters very well)

A couple years ago, WB did a direct to dvd sequel to The Lost Boys and are working on another one.

One thing is certain for me, I think a part of it should take place in an amusement park.

Something that hasn't come up is the issue with the score. Jerry Goldsmith has since passed away, leaving a big question mark on who would take over the infamous Gremlins Rag. Personally, I'd go with Michael Giacchino since he has some of Goldsmith's sensibilities, but I can see them getting Brian Tyler (not really who I want).

Good point.

A little update: Dante has come out and said that he doesn't know anything official on the matter.

Of course, Dante hasn't really shown any interest in a third film. In fact, he didn't really show any interest in a second film until WB said he could go wild with it. Of course, MarketSaw did say that it was in the early stages with a few bumps in the way.

That would be great.
