Video game fans might enjoy this! Director Gore Verbinski, who was previously reported as being off the project, has recently given an update on the Bioshock movie.
“We’re working trying to make it. The problem with BioShock was: R-rated movie, underwater, horror. It’s a really expensive R-rated movie,” he explained. “So we’re trying to figure out a way working with [director] Juan Carlos [Fresnadillo] to get the budget down and still keep so it’s true to the core audience, you know? The thing is it has to be R, a hard R.”
The world of Bioshock is incredible and I can’t wait to see how the retr0 underwater world of Rapture translates to the screen. As for the R rating? Having played the game, I don’t see how it couldn’t be R rated. But I also hope they don’t just load the screenplay up with blood and guts just to appease the gore hounds.
Atmosphere is important to Bioshock, but the track record of video game movies, especially those with similar story content (Doom, Resident Evil), doesn’t necessarily spark confidence in the project. What we don’t need is yet another video game movie that is chock full of ridiculous action set pieces, but completely lacking in the character, theatrics, and story departments!
