Actors Matt Damon and Josh Brolin are looking to join Jeff Bridges in the Joel and Ethan Coen directed remake of True Grit. Bridges will be playing the role once filled by John Wayne, US Marshal Rooster J. Cogburn. Damon will be portraying a Texas Ranger who teams up with Cogburn and a 14 year old girl to help track down her father’s killer, Tom Chaney. Brolin is up for the role of Chaney.
The original True Grit was released in 1969 and earned Wayne an Oscar for Best Actor. A 1975 sequel, Rooster Cogburn, soon followed with Katharine Hepburn and Anthony Zerbe co-starring with Wayne. Warren Oates then took over the Cogburn role in the 1978 made for television sequel True Grit: A Further Adventure.
According to earlier reports, the story will be told from the little girl’s point of view like the original novel. No word on a release date at this time.
