Tony Award winner Hugh Jackman will star as P.T. Barnum in the musical biography The Greatest Showman on Earth, which is currently in the developmental stage at 20th Century Fox.
Showman tells the story of Barnum, both an entertainer and a businessman, who promoted over-the-top hoaxes and started a traveling circus that was eventually billed as “The Greatest Show on Earth.”
The film will be produced by Lawrence Mark of Dreamgirls fame and will possibly have music and lyrics written by British musician Mika. The score itself is expected to be contemporary.
It also looks like Anne Hathaway is being considered to play the role of Jenny Lind, a Swedish opera singer, who was brought to America by Barnum. Hathaway previously did a number with Jackman during February’s Oscar ceremony and is also being eyed for an upcoming remake of Carousel, another one of Jackman’s future projects.
