Sam Raimi has signed on to direct a film adaption of Blizzard Entertainment’s popular Warcraft video game series for Warner Bros. Joining him is The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven and Raimi’s usual collaborator Robert Tapert, serving as an executive producer. Blizzard and Legendary Pictures will produce the film.
1994′s Warcraft was a real time strategy game for the PC that involved picking sides (orcs or humans), assigning jobs, building things, and fighting. It spawned two sequels and an extremely popular MMORPG called World of Warcraft.
Considering his more recent involvement with the hit blockbuster Spiderman series and the horror fantasy film Army of Darkness, not to mention producing fantasy series like Legend of the Seeker and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, one can only expect Raimi to bring a large scale, fun, fantasy element to the Warcraft movie.
A targeted release date has not been announced. Production won’t begin until after he completes work on Spiderman 4, which isn’t set to be released until 2011.
