For years, director Roland Emmerich and his producer, former-actor Dean Devlin, have been talking about making sequels to their 1996 blockbuster, Independence Day. There’s just been big obstacle holding them back. They don’t want to make a sequel without Will Smith, who was reportedly asking for a very pricey salary that was far too rich for their blood.
IESB is reporting that 20th CenturyFox has nabbed Smith for not one, but two Independence Day films. The idea is to shoot the sequels back-to-back with production starting as early as 2011. Despite filing this under the usual “reliable source” category, IESB makes it very clear this is just a rumor at this point.
Personally, I don’t see how you can continue the story from the first film, much less stretch it into three films. It’s been nearly 14 years since the original was released. Does such a demand even exist to justify making two more ID4 films?
